A pop of colour on the lip is always a good idea through the festive season. Whether you’re scoffing sufganiyot at a Hunnakah party, or sipping champagne at a Christmas bash, do it with a slick of red lippy.
I have tried lots of red lipsticks this year, and I have finally discovered my favourite – Read My Lips by Teeez Cosmetics. I found MAC to be drying, Rimmel to fade too quickly and Barry M to smudge too easily. Read My Lips by Teeez Cosmetics is easy to apply as it has a sharp curved edged. I applied it at 8am and by lunchtime – 1 snack and 3 cups of tea later – it is still in full swing.
The Nuxe 24 hour soothing and rehydrating fresh mask was behind the first door of my YOU Beauty Discovery advent calendar yesterday. What a great beauty product to find as the weather has just become incredibly cold. It’s time to focus on hydrating and moisturising the skin over the next four months. This is a good allrounder as it’s perfect for all skin types.
Firstly I soaked my face in warm water, then thoroughly exfoliated. I then applied the Nuxe rehydrating face mask and left for ten minutes. After washing the mask off I noticed an almost instant softness to my skin.
Whilst browsing in Lush over the weekend it was the smell of the Avobath bath bomb that caught my attention. It was dreamily refreshing in an aromatherapy sort of way. The look of the Avobath bath bomb is very simple compared to the other bath bombs available at Lush Cosmetics, it was that smell that I knew I had to take home with me. To try one yourself click here – you won’t regret it!
I saved my bath bomb for one of my 5am baths. Achey and half asleep I stepped in to my lovely warm bath. Ready, steady, go! I launched the pistachio green bath bomb in the water. FIZZZZZZZZZ. It whirred round the tub releasing the gorgeously relaxing scent I had first been attracted to. The water felt softer too and turned green!
After my bath I noticed my skin was super soft. This is due to the olive oil and avocado in the bath bomb. The smells of bergamot and lemongrass gently woke me up. What a treat! At £3.35 per Avobath bath bomb, it really is worth trying one. I think you’re going to like it!
I find it impossible to walk past a Lush shop without going in, so on a recent visit to Westfield in Shepherd’s Bush I slipped in to Lush and treated myself to a pot of Lush’s Cup O’Coffee exfoliating face mask. It contains roasted cocoa extract, vetivert and coriander oil to create an addictive fragrance and leave your skin gorgeously soft. Coffee ice cream, coffee cake, a mug of coffee, iced coffee – I love them all, so when seeing this little pot of fresh coffee smelling goop I knew I had to try it.
It’s gritty and greyish brown and not very attractive, but oh my – it really is amazing.
How To Use
Wash your face with warm water, making sure it’s make-up free. Apply a 50p size blob to each side of your face and circulate with your fingers, allowing the grittiness to exfoliate your skin.
Apply to the lower and upper areas of your face to, avoiding the eye area. Then apply to the upper neck, chin and jaw area and exfoliate here too.
Let the face mask sit for 15 minutes. I recommend wearing a fantastically sparkly bath hat in this time firstly to keep the face mask out of your hair and secondly for extra awesomeness.
Another excellent thing to do in this 15 minutes is listen to Bob Marley’s record “One Cup Of Coffee.” Very relative, don’t you think? Whilst wearing the sparkly hat is the perfect combination.
After 15 mins wash the face mask off with warm water and a flannel, then stand back and admire your stunningly soft and supple skin.
Summer is here and my make-up bag is becoming lighter and lighter. Today it’s 29’C so it’s the perfect day to write about Dusty Girls natural mineral bronzer “Sunshine”.
Normally I would wear a very light layer of foundation and then two strokes of bronzer to add some colour to my cheeks, today I am wearing a very light coat of natural foundation and one layer of “Sunshine.” My skin feels…. “relieved”. No more winter make-up. “Sunshine” bronzer is made from natural micas with Macadamia Oil and Jojoba Oil and Vitamin E to enhance and protect your skin. It keeps skin soft and nourished, even in this heat.
My simple tips for a summery complexion are as follows:
1. Exfoliate every evening. This will help rejuvenate the skin and clean the day’s impurities, excess oil and dry skin.
2. Drink plenty of water at room temperature and avoid dairy and sugar. A healthy digestive system equals healthy skin. Pesky hormones can cause annoying breakouts but dairy and sugar don’t help. Of course I’m not asking you to give up your Friday night take away, but just be slightly more conscious of what you’re putting in your body.
3. Take one Vitamin D 5000iu tablet a day. It doesn’t seem like much, but I have suffered with random breakouts and stubborn skin for years. Sunshine helps, but Vitamin D tablets have already made a huge difference to my skin. Results will appear after approximately three weeks. I have been using the Live Well brand, but any will do.
4. Be aware of what you are dressing your face with. Dusty Girls natural mineral make-up by MooGoo contains vitamins and healthy oils for the skin, including Jojoba natural Vitamin E and Macadamia. It doesn’t suffocate your pores and looks natural on.
In the summer wear a light tinted moisturiser with a concealer stick for any serious problem areas. Add some colour to your cheeks using MooGoo’s “Sunshine” natural mineral bronzer, which is much better than using chemical filled make-up to dress your skin.
Remember to wash your make-up brushes every month. Normal shampoo is fine, leave them to dry head sticking out over the edge of the sink or a bowl.
Dusty Girls do a fab face powder brush called the “Kabuki Brush”. It’s 100% cruelty free and uses no animal hair. The bristles as just as soft and don’t moult. It’s also the perfect size for any make-up bag as it’s head is larger than it’s handle.
It’s official – Vita Coco’s coconut oil is a miracle product!
Everyone should have a pot or three in their house. Here’s why…
Did you know that when it comes to weight loss, coconut oil can be a really helpful ingredient? Yes, it reduces hunger. The fatty acids in coconut oil significantly reduce your appetite, which positively affects body weight over the long term. I like to keep my jar of Vita Coco coconut oil in my tea tray, next to my Aga and kettle.
This way it’s always there ready to toss a teaspoon’s worth in a wok, on my toast, salad, in my coffee or even to take outside with me when sunbathing.
Frying butternut squash with garlic, chilli and Vita Coco coconut oil. Sorry for the slight blur – the heat had taken over!
Butternut squash cooked with Vita Coco coconut oil, zesty guacamole and a veggie burger.
Simple dishes such as tomato salad or even my morning porridge with blueberries and honey always receive a teaspoons drizzle of Vita Coco coconut oil.
Drizzle Vita Coco coconut oil over the salad
Stir a teaspoon of Vita Coco coconut oil in to your porridge. Then add blueberries and honey.
Not only is Vita Coco coconut oil an official “superfood”, it’s also a super item to have in your bathroom cupboard. Add a tablespoon’s worth to your bath and soak up the moisture. The smell is also delicious, very gentle and soft.
Fresh moisturised leggies!
Use Vita Coco’s coconut oil as a moisturiser for your body or for your hair. It works fantastically as conditioner. My advice to you is to replace any expensive chemical filled hair products with a simple jar of Vita Coco coconut oil. It will moisturise and strengthen your hair to a higher quality than any chemical filled product.
My simple instructions for using coconut oil as conditioner are as follows. To use on dry hair, take a pea size amount and melt in the warmth of your hands or pour a tablespoon’s amount of the coconut oil in liquid form in to your palm. Rub evenly in to your palms and massage in to the ends of your hair. Then brush through.
Sorry about the blur! It was steamy in the bathroom!
To use coconut oil on wet hair as a conditioning treatment you will need a good quality hair brush, a large hair clip and two tablespoon’s worth of coconut oil in liquid form (FIG 1). Evenly massage it in to your wet hair and through the strands too. Take a wide tooth comb/good quality hairbrush and brush it through (FIG 2). I currently have ombre hair, if you do too I recommend adding a little extra coconut oil in to the start of the bleached area of your hair (FIG 3). Then massage extra coconut oil in to the ends of your hair, as this is always an area that needs extra moisture (FIG 4). Clip your hair up or wear a shower cap for an hour, or overnight. The longer you leave it, the softer your hair will be.
When ready to wash make sure you shampoo your hair twice. As coconut oil – is obviously an oil – it’s important to wash it out after this process as it will become greasy if left in. If you have bleached hair or dry hair, once your hair is dry, take a pea sized amount of coconut oil in liquid form and evenly massage it in to the ends of your hair. You will now have fabulous hair!
Buy your miracle jar of Vita Coco coconut oil from any of the following retailers. There’s every reason to stock up and spread the good word!
I am a huge fan of Rimmel nail polishes – especially the polishes that dry in 60 seconds. The one feature that really attracts me to them is the curved-edge brush. Unlike square-edged brushes, the curve allows for the brush to cover the whole nail without need for correction. Rimmel X Rita Ora have launched a range of 12 nail polishes that are perfect for the summer and dry win 60 seconds.
I decided to try “Glaston Berry” as I am a sucker for bright coral shades. Also I loved the name! The 8ml bottle cost £2.99 in Boots. I love the 1960s style daisies on the brush it reminded me a lot of vintage Mary Quant cosmetics.
Once applied, the polish dried in approximately one minute. I only used one coat and then one layer of top coat. The colour came out very evenly and was thick enough to use as one coat. This is great for anyone who’s in a hurry when it comes to beauty. It’s also fab for popping in your make-up bag and using to cover chips. Grab yourself a bottle for summer! xx
One of my favourite beauty brands – MUA aka Make Up Academy has released a nail polish shade called Orchid. It is a pinky mauve that I am finding quite hard to chip. I have tried so many different nail polishes and this little beauty is proving the best. I have been wearing it for 4 days and so far no cracks! It’s officially a record! And what’s the cherry on this cake? It’s only £1. Go and stock up now ladies!
The summer’s coming up I can’t wait to have some fun with summer braiding, pastel shades and beach waves. This will be the first summer I have had long hair for 4 years as I chopped it all off after a frustrating dreadlock situation at Bestival. I rocked my peroxide bob to the max for years then decided it was time to let it grow, give it a rest from the bleach and a break from the heat styling instruments. My hair has grown so fast since I begun taking care of it. I know lots of you are hunting for tips so I thought I’d share mine. First I will give a few tips on growing out your bob. Then I will give my tips on how to grow your hair healthier and faster.
Bye Bye Bob: I had a really short bob that was white blonde. My hair is now long and a more natural blonde with white blonde highlights. The first step of growing out your bob is to kick the habit of having it maintained and look at hairstyles that are two inches than what you currently have. Try researching lob cut, lob hair style. This will instantly give you something to aim for. Leave the tongs to hibernate and start using V05 hot oil or coconut oil on your hair. Rub a pea sized amount in your palm then massage it in when your hair is towel dry. If you have bleached hair make sure you massage it in to the ends. Snap up a kids no tangles spray in conditioner too. This will help when you brush your hair after the shower. Do not cut your hair for about three months, by this point using no heat will have protected your hair enough for it to not need trimming. Style your hair towards the lob style and by the three month mark you will have reached that desired look. If you’re getting bored of waiting for longer hair, experiment with a fringe, or your hair colour. Patience is a virtue! Follow my tips of how to grow healthy hair faster once you reach this stage.
How To Grow Your Hair Faster And Healthier: I am going to give my tips in short points below as I know I rambled a bit above!
DROP THE TONGS! Do you want dry, frazzled, product filled hair that’s going to snap off? OH HELL NO! From now on it’s no more straighteners, tongs, curlers, hair dryers, crimpers etc. It’s back to old-school sleeping in plaits, rag curls and tying a loose bun in towel dry hair. TRUST ME – you will see a speedy improvement in your hair after about a week.
MIND HOW YOU BRUSH YOUR HAIR: It might sound silly that something that seems so insignificant could really make a different, but yeah it does and it makes a big difference. Invest in a brush that cares for your hair. I recommend the “maxi-phine taming brush” by Kent Brushes. It’s a fantastic quality hairbrush and a great price at only £10.
The Maxi-Phine Taming brush by Kent Brushes
Never brush your hair straight from the shower. Towel dry it, then spray with a tangle free leave in conditioner. I am currently using Schwarzkopf Supersoft Kids Detangling Spray. Ok, yes I know it’s for kids. But it does the trick – no knots, no broken hair, no ripped ends – and yup it smells great too! AND you can pick it up in Poundland. Everyone loves a bargain!
It does the trick and smells great!
3. LET’S GO COCO! Coconut oil is not only great for your diet, it’s also great for your hair, skin and nails. Take a soft pea sized amount, rub it in your palm and massage in to the ends of your hair. Then let your hair dry naturally.
4. DIET FOR HEALTHY HAIR: I don’t mean stick to rabbit food but by including more foods with healthy fat content such as avocado, salmon, walnuts, eggs, lentils, wholegrains and foods rich in iron you can really make a difference to your locks. Iron is REALLY important for hair growth as it helps carry oxygen to the hair follicles. Eating too little iron can cause hair loss. True fact!
